Disaster Information
Weipa is situated on the West coast of Cape York Peninsula. Surrounded by warm waters and heavy woodland alluvial plains culminating into harsh outback conditions. Our remote community is very tropical, consisting of three distinct seasons, all which vary in their intensity and duration.
The ‘wet season’, which runs from December through to early May has extreme humidity, warm still nights, and heavy rainfall, as well as monsoonal Lows and Tropical Cyclones.
The ‘dry season’, running from May to September, features a lot cooler, drier days, much cooler nights, and little to no rainfall. This is also when we have our annual burn off program, which prevents arson and accidental bushfires.
The ‘build-up season’, or as locals refer to it as ‘Mango Madness’, running from October to December, is oppressively hot and humid, with infrequent, heavy downpours associated with severe thunderstorms and lightning shows, with the odd hundreds of flies too!
Weipa has an established Local Disaster Management Group, consisting of many organisations and volunteers that serve our community.
Our approach is Prevention, Preparation, Response and Recovery.
