NEW Food Safety Requirements from December 2023

Published: 16th October 2023

Changes to National Food Standards which come into effect in December 2023 mean most licenced food businesses within Weipa will need to meet new food safety standards.

The new standards contain new requirements for food safety supervisors, food handler training and record keeping of critical food handling and cleaning activities.

Detailed information on the new national standards is available from:

- Queensland Health and,

-Food Standards Australia.

What Do I Need to Do?

1. Confirm which category of food business you fall into.

While most licenced food businesses within Weipa will be category 1 food businesses review the criteria for category 1 and category 2 businesses as the requirements are different.

2.  Notify WTA of your current Food Safety Supervisor via the following form. All food safety supervisors need to meet a national training competency standard and now must obtain certification at least every 5 years.

3.  Ensure all food handlers have appropriate food safety skills to do their jobs.

All food handlers should have completed ‘I’m Alert’ Training.

4.  For category 1 businesses. Ensure you have evidence or records which show that you are effectively managing food safety risks. For example this could include keeping records of cleaning and sanitising or any temperature checks that are carried out.

For details on your responsibilities ensure that you have reviewed the comprehensive information available from Queensland Health and Safe Food Australia websites.
